Hug Chair in the SuperYacht Magazine

Originally a classical ballet dancer, Hungarian designer Gabriella Asztalos now expresses her emotions through the shapes, materials and forms of her furniture. She presented a luxurious, spiralling two-person chair—the Hug Chair—at the show. “With the Hug Chair I tried to translate intimate social interaction into an exclusive furniture design,” says Asztalos. “When we hug, our arms create a spiral form. I focused not only on the shape, but also on the intimacy of a hug. The experience one gets from sitting in the Hug Chair is similar to the feelings of a hug: affection, warmth, care, support, comfort, trust, love.”

The Hug Chair has made quite a big impact in the design world already, having won the New York International Contemporary Furniture Design Competition 2011 at ICFF and the Singapore International Furniture Design Award 2011 at IFFS. Asztalos dedicates a lot of time to material research and as the focus is on luxury design, she uses only the best quality of materials from all over Europe. The Hug Chair, for instance, is upholstered with top-quality leather from Italy and the rotating base is of high-grade stainless steel from Germany. It is available in white lacquer, black lacquer and a more classic walnut wood.
